Model car scale sizes

Diecast car models sizes are measured and referred to in terms of 'scale'. The scale size is a fraction of the full size of the model; for example a 1:18 scale model car is 1:18th or 'an 18th' the size of the real car. The smaller the number of the scale size, the larger the model. Hence scale 1:12 is bigger than scale 1:18. At Silent Autos we stock the most popular four diecast scales: 1:12, 1:18, 1:43 and 1:64 amongst others.

Scale size 1:18 is between 7-8 inches (18-20cm) long and one of the most popular sizes because the diecast models are large with excellent detail. Scale size 1:12 car models are the largest, between 14-15 inches (36-38cm) long. The best collectors' pieces are the better quality models made with good materials, paintwork, workmanship and superb detailing which is reflected in pricing, and hence mainly sought after by adult collectors.

Scale size 1:43 is the most popular scale model globally since it was originally made by Dinky in the 1930's to match 'O gauge' model railways. This size is more common in the UK, Europe, Australia & Japan than in the US. Scale size 1:64 has for many years been a popular size of many diecast toys and offered at very affordable prices. However in the last few years, model brands such as AutoArt have produced a range of classic road cars of this size at hugely competitive prices, making these highly desirable diecast model cars available to the younger budding enthusiasts of diecast collectibles.
